There has been a great deal of "buzz" on the Internet recently about 'Legitimate Paid Online Surveys'. It's time for some definitions and clarifications as to exactly what that term means.

Definitions: What are Legitimate Paid Online Surveys?:

What they are:

  Legitimate paid online surveys are serious surveys designed by market researchers to measure consumer preferences, opinions and awareness levels for purposes of market research.

What they are not:

 Questionnaires pre-qualifying someone as a sales prospect.

 A device used to extract money from prospects with the expectation of their taking a "survey" and getting paid for it.

 Surveys offered or solicited with a false promise or representation that the survey would be for real compensation, but that leave the survey participant with little or nothing for his or her efforts.  

Clarification: What distinguishes Legitimate Paid Online Surveys from other so-called "paid online surveys"?

 Legitimate paid online surveys are made for some kind of compensation, the type, amounts and terms of which are spelled out clearly up front, before the participant is asked or permitted to take the survey. Then these terms are adhered to and met by the survey maker afterward. Other surveys are unclear as to compensation terms and arrangements, generally resulting in the participant receiving little or nothing for his efforts.

 Legitimate paid online surveys are conducted for serious market research information needs to collect valuable information.  The questions are sharp, clear and focussed. Others, made for less serious or frivolous purposes, use general questions that are unclear or subject to wide differences in interpretation.

 Legitimate paid online surveys are made by legitimate, serious survey makers who respect and protect the privacy of their survey participants. Others do not respect the privacy of survey takers, even sell the demographic and other data of survey participants to sales companies.
